Discovering the wild beauty of Liguria

Alta Via dei Monti Liguri

Typology
cycling route
Duration
1 day
Number of Stages

Difficulty
Medium

The set of paths and mule tracks that connect the two ends of the Ligurian Riviera, from Ventimiglia to Ceparana, make up the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. A journey with a mystical atmosphere in a harsh and at the same time gentle environment, between the coast and the hinterland, the Alps and the Apennines, the sea and the sky and long meadows rarely below a thousand meters. The historical-cultural heritage scattered along the route is enormous, from the western fortification line to the ancient rural settlements.

Stage 14 of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, which goes from Giogo di Giustenice to Colle del Melogno, can also be traveled by bicycle. However, given the varied terrain and the differences in altitude present, we recommend the use of a MTB e-bike or to have good experience as a biker. The route follows the walking route but in some cases it was preferred to deviate to offer an itinerary that can be entirely cycled.

From the Giogo of Giustenice to Colle del Melogno

You will cross the Barbottina Forest, one of the most beautiful and best preserved beech forests in Liguria, with a great variety of trees: very tall trees, mountain maples, ash trees, birches, laburnums, firs and Scots pines. Of note is the fortification system of Colle di Melogno, of Napoleonic origin, including the Central Fort, Tartagna and Merizzo, built at the end of the nineteenth century. While the Central Fort is placed to block the road that crosses the pass, the other two are located on two different elevations that can be reached from the Alta Via with short detours.

Towards Finale Ligure

Towards Finale Ligure

After visiting the Ligurian mountains, you can go down to Finale Ligure where you will be welcomed by a splendid seafront with a historic center composed of three villages, Finalborgo, Finalmarina and Finalpia.

The 9 km route is particularly pleasant thanks to its vast woodland cover, which represents one of the main points of interest of the stage. However, due to frequent fog and the possibility of snow in winter, it is advisable to travel it during the most beautiful spring days.
