Nautoscopio

Overview

Between the Foro Italico and the Cala, in what was once a rubbish dump that was later rehabilitated and reopened as a beach, the Nautoscopio was installed in 2009. This is a contemporary architectural work by Giuseppe Amato, who envisaged it as an observatory overlooking the sea and its vessels and the first in a series of Case d'Artistaor Unexpected Homes. A shelter that climbs, descends and rotates. By day, it faces the horizon, at night it rotates on itself to frame the erupting volcano. When the sea is flat it drops almost to the water's surface, during a storm it rises up to fifteen metres high.
