The last stage of the Via Romea Strata starts from La Storta, along the ancient route of the Via Cassia, and leads progressively towards the heart of the Eternal City. It is a path full of excitement, where every step brings you closer to the long-awaited destination. After the first stretches between residential areas and strips of Roman countryside, you pass through green areas that still offer glimpses of nature, as if to prepare the pilgrim for entering the urban dimension. The landscape changes gradually: the traffic increases, the spaces become more built-up, but the sense of the journey remains intact, sustained by the awareness of the imminent arrival. Entering Rome is an intense moment. As you pass through historic neighbourhoods and follow the signs towards the centre, you can sense all the thousand-year stratification of the city. The emotion culminates with the arrival in St Peter's Square, where the majesty of the colonnade welcomes pilgrims as per centuries-old tradition. In front of St Peter's Basilica, the symbolic destination of the journey, fatigue gives way to gratitude and joy at having completed a route rich in history, nature and spirituality. It is a final stage that combines contemplation and enthusiasm, marking the end of the journey but also the beginning of a new perspective on the path taken. |
