Along the valley, the ancient route of the Via Lauretana often underwent maintenance work due to the flooding of the Chienti river. Towards the end of the 17th century it was chosen to eventually divert the course of the river. In Tolentino, in more recent times, changes were added to take it away from the historic center. Leaving from Belforte del Chienti, you cross the 16th century church of the Santissimo Crocifisso and the church of San Sebastiano, until you reach the triumphal arch in honor of Pius VI and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Next to the entrance, on the external façade, there is an epigraph that reads: «FROM HERE IS / TOLENTINO IS / A MILE AND A HALF / AND TEN STEPS Ó / PILGRIM / 1748».
