Stage along the route via Passo della Consuma
The journey could only begin at the world's largest Franciscan church: the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. One of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture in Italy, it safeguards artistic treasures depicting the life of St. Francis, bearing the signatures of Brunelleschi, Giotto, and Donatello. It is also the final resting place of illustrious figures such as Galileo, Michelangelo, and Ugo Foscolo—one of the symbols of the City of the Lily, needing little introduction.
Leaving behind this treasure trove of art, history, and spirituality and passing the imposing National Library, the route follows the right bank of the Arno River for a good stretch, offering glimpses of unexpected urban nature and outdoor artistic perspectives, such as the Enzo Pazzagli Park, a garden filled with numerous works by the late artist.
Among historic villages that have retained a timeless atmosphere—such as Sant’Andrea a Rovezzano with its ancient mill—and centuries-old places of worship—like the parish church of San Giovanni a Remole in the locality of Le Sieci, from which one can spot one of the oldest examples of industrial archaeology in Europe, the Gualchiere di Remole—Pontassieve soon opens its doors, boasting numerous buildings of historical and religious significance.
