Stage along the route via Sansepolcro
Perched on the rocky cliff, the rugged hermitage of Cerbaiolo amazes with its unique mystical and wild beauty, reminiscent of the Sanctuary of La Verna, so much so that a popular saying emphasizes: “He who has seen La Verna but not Cerbaiolo, has seen the mother but not the child.”
The journey heads towards the village of Piero della Francesca, Sansepolcro, through the natural reserve of Alpe della Luna, a chain of mountain ridges covered with forests and pastures that runs along the Apennine ridge, rhythmically marked by spectacular blocks of sandstone and marl, such as Ripa della Luna, a cliff that rises above 1400 meters, reaching the highest point of the reserve.
Crossing a small wooden bridge over the frothy Fosso di Stianta stream, a tributary of the Tignana, which originates from the nearby Monte dei Frati, you are about halfway through the stage. The path then descends towards the valley and ends in the locality of Montagna. A small hamlet of Sansepolcro, nestled at the base of the Alpe della Luna mountains, with only a few dozen inhabitants and characterized by typical stone houses, it is a timeless place and a site of worship. It hosts the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and the Chapel of Blessed Ranieri, dedicated to the Franciscan friar from Sansepolcro who devoted his life to the poor, revered for this right after his death.
