You set off from St Peter's Basilica, one of the most famous monuments in the world and the destination of millions of pilgrims. From a place that marks the end of the journey of many pilgrims, our journey through the places and nature of St Francis of Assisi begins here. You will leave behind chaos and bustle, on foot, to discover the villages in Sabina Laziale and in Umbria, the Green Heart of Italy.
While walking, you will get to know a way of life that is slower and in harmony with St Francis' message of peace and love of nature.
From St Peter's Square, you set off towards Castel Sant'Angelo and soon you will reach Ponte Milvio, one of the most ancient and important bridges in Rome. Along the urban route, you will come across “Parco della Musica”, the Park of Villa Glori, passing alongside the Mosque of Rome.
The journey is mainly on the cycle lane and the pavement. You cross the bridge over the Aniene river to reach the church of the Angeli Custodi (Guardian Angels) in Monte Sacro. According to legend, the augurs used to go there to make their prophesies by observing the flight of the birds and this gave rise to the sacredness of the mount.
