Stage 2.B: Arezzo - Pieve di Rigutino

A stage on the Arezzo branch.  

A hilly terrace overlooking the surrounding valleys and a centre of the Renaissance, home to illustrious figures such as Vasari and Petrarch, Arezzo is surrounded by the Tiber Valley, the Casentino, Valdarno and Valdichiana areas. From here, the route continues towards the plain as we prepare to immerse ourselves in this last valley. Just outside the city, the route passes through the lush nature of the Sargiano woodland. This protected area of natural interest not only offers a haven for vulnerable plant and bird species but also houses a former Franciscan convent, an atmospheric sacred building that rises from the vegetation as a symbol of the intimate dialogue between man and nature.

Amid the beautiful rural landscapes, admiring historic residences, the Castle of Policiano and ancient parish churches, the Church of and ancient parishes, the church of St Quiricus of the Stony Ground in Rigutino on the slopes of Monte Lignano, you enter Castiglion Fiorentino. The Cassero tower, rising into the sky, recalls the medieval imprint of the town. But its origins are far older. Archaeological discoveries have revealed the importance of the town as an Etruscan centre, and there are numerous remains that can still be seen today. There are also many fine historic buildings and places of worship dotted around the town centre, including the Romanesque Church of St Francis, whose austere and minimalist façade conceals treasures of sacred art such as the frescoes depicting scenes from the saint's life. Art and history can be appreciated in the charming narrow streets, as can the authentic flavours at the table. In the Valdichiana area, a cattle breed of almost mammoth size has been bred for centuries, and its delicious meat, known as "Chianina", is the pride and joy of the local culinary tradition.
