Overview
Sustainable transformation. This is the message chosen for this year’s World Tourism Day, which is being celebrated under the banner of sustainability and respect for our surroundings. Combating overtourism, promoting often-overlooked destinations in favor of those that are too well-known, and the desire to immerse oneself in local culture and reconnect with our environment: these are the themes awakening consciousness and sparking a new reflection on tourism, one that will increasingly take hold in the coming years. Established during the General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization in Torremolinos, Spain, in 1979, the date of September 27 was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes. Numerous events are scheduled to take place across Italy. Beyond contributing to the global economy, tourism sets millions of people in motion across the globe, encouraging intercultural dialogue. For this very reason, countries must equip themselves with policies aimed at promoting integrated mobility, accessibility and inclusiveness, environmental respect, and the preservation of local traditions, with the goal of passing them down to future generations.
