Overview
Imposing and eye-catching, the Mausoleum in honour of the man who worked for the italianisation of Trento was built in 1935 by Veronese architect Ettore Fagioli. This monument to Cesare Battisti on the Doss, with its circular shape borrowed from ancient culture, is striking because of its skilful combination of contrasts (full and empty spaces, light and shadow effects) as well as the careful choice of materials, all from the Trentino region. The colonnade that dominates the main structure is enchanting: sixteen columns, more than ten metres high, form a circular crown that holds, in the centre, the altar above which stands the large memorial tomb area. Three large openings lead inside the mausoleum, where the casket containing Battisti's remains is located in the hypogeum.
