Stage along the route via Sansepolcro
From Sansepolcro, a historic gem of the Alta Valtiberina and an important stop for Saint Francis' pilgrimages to and from La Verna, the journey continues for a few but evocative kilometers to Anghiari, the final destination of the Via di Francesco in Valtiberina.
A short stage, but not lacking in history and spirituality, at the border between Tuscany and Umbria. After briefly following the Tevere River, the route heads toward the small village of Gricignano, a place with special devotion to Saint Francis, where events dedicated to him have been organized. Along the way, as the path enters the municipality of Anghiari, you'll pass the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria a Corsano, located in San Leo, adorned with a beautiful Madonna del Latte, a fresco from the 14th century by the Arezzo school. The route also passes near the Castle of Sorci, a small but captivating fortress steeped in myth and legend. It is said that a ghost haunts its walls, and it has been the inspiration for great works, including the iconic Italian comedy film Non ci resta che piangere starring Troisi and Benigni.
A historical prelude to the arrival at Anghiari, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, renowned for its architectural and artistic heritage, as well as for the famous Battle of Anghiari fought in 1440 between the Milanese Visconti army and the Florentine Republic—an event immortalized by Leonardo da Vinci.
