Stage along the route via Vallombrosa
From one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Poppi, the itinerary forks, and the journey can continue along either the right or left bank of the Arno River, before reconnecting just before Bibbiena.
A short stage, but no less interesting from a historical and religious perspective. It offers the opportunity to explore the village of Poppi and its castle, which houses 25,000 ancient volumes in the Rilliana library, the magnificent banquet hall, and the tower from which you can admire the breathtaking landscapes surrounding the manor, as well as important sacred buildings such as the Abbey of San Fedele, the Propositura Church of Saints Marco and Lorenzo, and the Oratory of the Madonna del Morbo.
Alternatively, it’s an opportunity to extend the stop in the medieval village of Bibbiena, dotted with noble palaces such as the Dovizi Palace and places of worship like the Oratory dedicated to Saint Francis. The village is located a short distance from the final point of the stage, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sasso, located in the homonymous area. This religious complex, elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica in 1942, holds works of particular artistic value, such as the wooden statue of the Madonna del Buio, a work from the Florentine school, which is associated with several miracles, and a glazed frieze attributed to Fra’ Mattia della Robbia.
