Descending from Ponticelli di Scandriglia along a stretch of asphalt and dirt roads flanked by olive groves and oak trees, we arrive in Poggio Corese, from where, on our left, we can spot the imposing Orsini Castle of Nerola.
Following a path which intersects more than once the Via Salaria Vecchia, we reach the village of Acquaviva, where we can take a refreshing stop at a bar or a grocery store.
We continue down into a valley and then climb up a steep slope towards Montelibretti, home to the suggestive Palazzo Barberini. Fields and olive trees give way to large orchards, as we walk along the Via Vecchia Nomentana, an ancient Roman consular road.
Due to the alternation of climbs and descents, a slow and constant pace is recommended. On our way, we can admire the thirteenth century Torre della Fiora in the distance.
We find ourselves just a few kilometres from Rome, in the “Riserva Naturale di Macchia di Gattaceca”, among fields of grain and forage. Our destination is the historic centre of Monterotondo, an ancient fiefdom of the Barberini Family.
