The Way of St Francis in Abruzzo is a trekking route of about 80 km. It is divided into 11 stages, connecting the Rocche Plateau and the Subequana Valley and retracing the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi and Blessed Thomas of Celano. The route passes through villages, hills, paths and places of remembrance, offering an experience of pilgrimage and exploration of inland Abruzzo. This stage is all about slow pace, spirituality and contact with nature. From Rocca di Mezzo to Secinaro via Ovindoli, Celano, Aielli, Collarmele, Gagliano Aterno and Castelvecchio Subequo, the trail leads the pilgrim past churches, abbeys and castles, across streams, plateaus and valleys that preserve a valuable religious, historical and landscape heritage. This itinerary invites you to slow down, observe and rediscover the deep bond between people, the land and Creation, interpreting the Franciscan values of simplicity, hospitality and care for the natural environment in a contemporary way.
