Stage 5.A: Citerna - Monterchi - Città di Castello

From the medieval village of Citerna, located on a hill overlooking the Upper Tiber Valley, you can follow the variant that leads to Monterchi and then on towards Città di Castello. The route heads towards Monterchi, a small Tuscan village famous for Piero della Francesca's masterpiece, Our Lady of Childbirth, which is kept in the museum named after the painting, the 'Museo della Madonna del Parto.' Visitors who pass through here leave enriched by the wonder of having seen one of the greatest masterpieces of the Renaissance. The route crosses gently-rolling hills dotted with olive trees and cypresses, overlooking the Tiber Valley and the Apennine landscape. This stretch invites contemplation, with views that seem to have come straight out of a Renaissance painting. Continuing towards Città di Castello, the route passes farmhouses and guest houses, an ideal stop for those seeking refreshment and direct contact with nature.
