Torre del Fiscale Park

Overview

The Torre del Fiscale, an imposing structure about thirty metres high in the Appia Antica Archaeological Park, is located in the region where the Claudian and Marcius aqueducts join. Built of tufa blocks and rows of bricks with a square base, it still has small rectangular windows with marble frames. Inside, it was divided into three levels, which are no longer present. The pontoon holes, necessary for its construction and for the balconies, are still clearly visible on the exterior walls. The architectural layering of the Torre del Fiscale sums up more than two thousand years of history. The construction technique and features of the tower indicate that it was built between the 12th and 13th centuries.
This monument represents one of the best examples of towers and farmhouses that still mark the landscape of the Agro Romano today. It was previously thought that these structures were part of an articulated lookout and signalling system for the purposes of defence. However, recent studies have revealed that they arose to protect the crops and landed property of high lineage families. In a document dated 1277, the tower was transferred together with a mill and some vineyards, suggesting that they were part of an agricultural estate. The name "Torre del Fiscale" dates back to the 17th century, when it was given to Monsignor Filippo Foppi, treasurer of the Papal State.
Between 2003 and 2010, it was the subject of studies, monitoring, and consolidation and restoration work in order to preserve its integrity and allow it to be used by the public. Today, the Torre del Fiscale appears in its full magnificence to anyone walking through the Parco degli Acquedotti, thanks also to an innovative lighting system that makes it an extraordinary sight to see, even at night.
