Following a terrible epidemic of plague in the mid-15th century, the population erected a wooden hut around a painted tile depicting the Virgin and Child, which became the first foundation of the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Quercia. Built by the Domenicans in Renaissance style, the church is characterised by three entrance portals on which there are ceramic lunettes by Andrea della Robbia. The lacunar ceiling in pure gold is the artwork of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.
