L'Aquila, the Basilica of San Bernardino

The Basilica of San Bernardino dominates the city from on high. Built in the mid-fifteenth century, it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1703 and still has the original facade dating from 1540. A significant example of Renaissance architecture, the church has perfect forms, with numerous references to the ancient Roman buildings, such as the arch of the central portal and the tympanums on the sides. The facade is divided into three levels with columns in the three classic styles: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
