Ancona: cathedral of San Ciriaco

Standing on the hill of the ancient Greek acropolis, the cathedral of San Ciriaco is one of the most interesting medieval churches in the Marche region. Built after the year one thousand in Romanesque form, it presents elements of Byzantine and Gothic influence. Hanging arches mark the upper profile, while below the great rose window there is a fine portal with a magnificent prothyrum, with columns resting on lions. The thirteenth-century cupola dominates the church. Before the cathedral opens an impressive view of the port of Ancona.
