Palau

Overview

The gateway to the Maddalena archipelago

Crystal-clear sea, the La Maddalena archipelago on the doorstep and one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Palau, one of the jewels of Gallura, is a small fishing village that has managed to make increasing tourism one of its strengths. It is from here that you can take the ferry to the island of La Maddalena. You will be fascinated by the rich natural and architectural heritage this area has to offer.

One of the most photographed spots is undoubtedly the Rock of Capo d'Orso, a natural granite monument that can be reached in just a few minutes from the town centre, after tackling a flight of steps that can be challenging for the less energetic. The Monte Altura fortress, built on the promontory above Palau, can be visited during the summer season. Another magical place to discover at any time of year is the so-called Gate of Paradise, a small stone opening leading to a cove surrounded by Mediterranean maquis.

And for lovers of the sea, there is a range of wonderful options. Like the Porto Pollo beach, which stretches for 3 kilometres of white sand, the beach of La Sciumara and the small beach of Ulticeddu, nestled between two red granite headlands between Palau and Cannigione.
