Pienza

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Pienza, from the top of its hill, faces the Crete Senesi to the north and the Amiata to the south. It represents the "ideal city" of Renaissance urban planning: around 1459, in fact, Pope Pius II, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, wanted to transform the medieval village of Corsignano by redesigning it according to the theories of Leon Battista Alberti and entrusted the work to Bernardo Rossellino, who had already collaborated with Alberti.

Rossellino is entitled the course, the main road axis of the village, where there are numerous shops that sell local culinary products, above all the famous pecorino cheese.

Not to be missed is Piazza Pio II, trapezoidal in shape, the Cathedral, the Piccolomini palace with the beautiful well built to a design by Rossellino and the Town Hall. A few km away, also Monticchiello, a medieval village surrounded by walls, is worth a visit, also on the occasion of the review of the Poor Theatre, which sees the inhabitants of the village act in costume.
