Gaetano Donizetti Theatre

Overview

The theatre overlooking the Sentierone has a late nineteenth-century façade, but had been founded as early as 1786. Today, it is an important cultural centre in the city for its opera, ballet and drama seasons, as well as for cycles of musical events such as Bergamo Jazz.

There is also a Donizetti Museum to commemorate the composer Donizetti – but in the Upper Town – which originated from a celebratory exhibition organised on the occasion of the centenary of his birth and then became permanent. The material preserved relates to the life and works of the Bergamasque musician: letters, scores, documents, autographs, memorabilia, period instruments and furnishings, as well as drawings and paintings by local authors up to the 19th century.

Donizetti\'s birthplace in Bergamo can also be visited, run by the Foundation in his name at 14 Borgo Canale. Both the house and the Donizetti Theatre, as well as that little gem that is the Social Theatre in the heart of the Upper Town, can be booked for guided tours.
