Bergamo Castles Cycle Route

Overview

A bike trip among ancient fortresses

The province of Bergamo hides treasures that can be discovered on a two-wheeler thanks to easy cycle routes that are also suitable for less experienced riders. One of the most evocative is the route that winds through the countryside, historic villages and ancient castles of the plains south of Bergamo.

The Bergamo Castles Cycle Route begins at the Treviglio railway station and ends after 36 kilometres at Grumello al Monte Castle, an ancient 13th-century fortress between Bergamo and Lake Iseo. The first important stop on the cycle route is the Castle of Brignano, better known as Palazzo Visconti, a sumptuous aristocratic residence in Baroque style. From here it is just a few kilometres until we reach the Castle of Malpaga, renovated from the second half of the 15th century.

Most of the route is on paved roads, but there are some sections on dirt roads that require extra care, especially near the castles. In the proximity of Cologno al Serio, you can take advantage of a section of cycle path to Urgnano, while the last part of the route follows the main road connecting Calcinate, Bolgare and Telgate.
