Overview
About fifteen kilometres north of Fondo, the Pass has the double wording because the last stretch of the upper Non Valley, just beyond the village of Tret, belongs to the Province of Bolzano: it is the so-called Deutschnonsberg, the German upper Non Valley. Underground fortifications built just before World War II have been recovered at the pass: the Gampen Bunker, with its collection of mineralogical findings, is part of the South Tyrolean museum network conceived by mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The double name also applies to the pair of villages near the pass: put together they are called Senale/Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde. Senale is a place of pilgrimage mentioned as early as the end of the 12th century: the church dedicated to the Madonna has colossal carved Baroque altars and many votive panels, including a 15th-century Madonna del Bosco. Attached to the sanctuary, a hospice accommodated wayfarers. For today's "wayfarers" there are paths, mule tracks, woods and friendly nature.
