The beating heart of the Tuscan village
With its characteristic L-shape and the many historical buildings that overlook it, the Piazza Grande in Montepulciano is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Dominating the slargo is the 14th-century Palazzo Comunale, with battlements and tower reminiscent of the more famous Palazzo della Signoria in Florence. Not to be outdone are Palazzo Contucci, built by Baldassarre Peruzzi in the 16th century, Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. The Well of the Griffins and Lions is in front of the latter. The square is completed by the Cathedral of the Assumption, with its unfinished façade and the Triptych of the Assumption by Taddeo di Bartolo kept inside. Beating heart of the city, Piazza Grande is animated all year round by locals and tourists. But in summer, it is at its best, when it turns into a stage for the theatrical performances of the Cantiere internazionale d'arte. If you come here on the last Sunday in August, don't miss the Bravìo delle Botti, a challenge between representatives of the eight town districts who push large barrels through the streets of the village.
