Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina

Overview

You can already recognise Castelnuovo from its peculiar shape, a shape reminiscent of a pine cone, which encloses small stone-paved streets and reminders of the medieval period, such as the parish church where a crucifix from the early 14th century, an extremely valuable work of the Pisan school of sculpture, is kept. Around the village, rich and luxuriant chestnut woods envelop the landscape with their colours that turn from deep green in summer to yellow, red and brown when autumn begins to blow over the hills. Finally, a walk takes you to the hamlet of Sasso, where the valley of the Cornia river begins and where you can observe the natural phenomena of the 'putizze' (cold gas fumes) and the 'fumarole' (gaseous emissions accompanied by steam) caused by the intense geothermal activity in this area.
