Parish of St Cassian

Overview

In the Church of St Cassiano, in the oldest part of the village, there is one of the most beautiful façades in the Lucchesia beyond the great basilicas of the city. Most local historians claim that the many Lombard-inspired sculptures adorning it date back to the first major reconstruction of the church in the 12th century. Of all the bas-reliefs on the façade, the one that most strikes the eye is the lunette inserted above the architrave, with human figures with their hands turned to the sky, in an attitude of prayer. According to historian Romano Silva, these figures would portray the prayer of Moses and his people during the battle between Amalek and Israel, as narrated in a passage from Exodus. Similar human figures are also present in other churches in the Lucchesia, although depicted differently.
