Cala Zaffiro

Overview

A secret cove in Plemmirio

Within the Marine Protected Area of Plemmirio, Cala Zaffiro (Sapphire Cove) is a corner of paradise on earth overlooking a sea of spectacular depths. The cove is sheltered from the wind, so you can enjoy a swim in the typically calm crystal-clear waters and snorkel or dive to discover the underwater treasures of this stretch of sea.

The ancient Plemmyrion, also mentioned by Virgil, is located on the Maddalena peninsula, not far from Syracuse. It’s an area full of surprises: amidst coves, cliffs, caves and multi-coloured seabeds, one can find Greek and Roman traces as well as findings from World War II. This is a place overflowing with history and breathtaking nature.

Just opposite Cala Zaffiro is the submerged statue of a mermaid known as La Sirena, dedicated to the diver Rossana Maiorca. All around the statue swim peacock damsels, seahorses and groupers and you can easily spot starfish and sea urchins among the posidonia meadows. From time to time dolphins show up around here.

Cala Zaffiro also has a sun terrace with a bar and restaurant where you can relax, sip a cocktail at sunset or enjoy a dinner by the sea.
