Etna Nord - Linguaglossa

Overview

Skiing on an active volcano

Have you ever skied on an active volcano? You can do just this at Etna Nord – Linguaglossa, home to a ski area boasting 10 kilometres of slopes and 4 ski lifts, at an altitude between 1,810 and 2,336 metres.

From the village of Linguaglossa, you can reach Piano Provenzana in the Etna Park. There you will find a car park, bar, restaurant, ski lift and volcano guides, who will accompany you up to 3,000 metres to admire the summit craters, either on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle.

Several paths start from Piano Provenzana. The widest and easiest route climbs up to the Volcanological Observatory overlooking the Valle del Leone, from which you can view the cone of the South-East Crater, the most active. You must be accompanied by a guide above 2,450 metres.

You can also explore the surrounding forests on horseback, or enjoy downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing along the Ragabo Pinewood trails. Skis, snowshoes and sledges are available for hire.

You can also explore Etna’s caves – lava flow tunnels created by ancient eruptions. The most spectacular are the huge Raspberry Cave and the Ice Cave, which contains a small perennial glacier.
