Overview
The area in which Garessio is located, an area divided by the natural watershed between the Tanaro and Casotto Valleys, is known for its waters with thermal properties and for a winter sports resort. There is, however, a hamlet of Garessio, Borgo Maggiore, which holds its historical roots and has preserved its medieval matrix appearance. Here, worth seeing are the imposing parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, designed by Francesco Gallo, demolished and rebuilt during the 19th century according to the original plan, and the Church of the Confraternity of San Giovanni. Here, every four years, on the evening of Good Friday, the Mortorio is re-enacted, a sacred representation of the Passion and Deposition of Christ that has been staged, in its current form, since 1750.
