Piazza Sant'Oronzo

The principal square in Lecce is dominated by the Colonna di Sant'Oronzo, constructed to thank the patron saint for salvation from the plague. This Roman column marked the end of the Via Appia in Brindisi. On top of the column stands the statue of Sant'Oronzo, to whom a spectacular feast day in August is dedicated. The Sedile, which overlooks the square, was built in 1592 as a tribunal; beside it is the ex-chapel of San Marco, the work of Venetian merchants dating from 1543.
