The Candele a Candelara festival, now in its 20th anniversary year, runs from 25 November to 17 December with various dates, including weekends and the long weekend of 8 December.
The event is held in the medieval village around Pesaro, where the artificial lighting is switched off every evening to make way for thousands of lit candles, creating a unique atmosphere. The electric lighting is scheduled to be turned off twice, followed by half an hour of warm, comforting candlelight.
The festival features a Christmas market in the medieval village, decorated with four Advent themes: prophets, shepherds, angels and Bethlehem. Shows and entertainment include luminous stilt-walkers, pixie players, jugglers and bagpipers. You can also watch people making beeswax candles and see wrought-iron candle sculptures. A new feature this year is the mechanised Nativity scene in the Church of Santa Lucia.
For children, there is the Elf Shop with creative workshops and the chance to meet Father Christmas. Another new attraction is the eco-friendly pedal carousel for kids. In the streets of the village, there is a large, 20-metre high Christmas tree with colourful lights.
The event also offers guided tours of 16th-century Villa Berloni and the Museum of Weaving and Embroidery, where you can discover the traditional texile craft.
In addition, there are over seventy wooden cottages housing handicrafts, gifts and a variety of candles.
Admission to the event costs EUR 3.00 up to 1 pm, and EUR 5.00 after 1 pm (free for children under the age of 10).
'Candele a Candelara' consolidates its collaboration with the city of Pesaro, named as Culture Capital for 2024, by offering cultural and tourist opportunities in the capital and promoting the provincial area through other Christmas events, such as 'A Christmas you don't expect', with neighbouring events in Urbino, Gradara, Fano, Mombaroccio and Frontone.
Two heated facilities serving traditional local dishes will be operating.
