Dragonara Castle

Overview

A fortress in Camogli

Overlooking one of the most beautiful stretches of the Ligurian coast and dominating the undisputed pearl of Paradise Gulf from above, Dragonara Castle, or Castel Dragone, is a must-see if you plan on exploring Camogli.

Built in the 13th century, it was initially a stronghold used by local villagers to defend the territory from pirate raids. It is no coincidence that its name derives from the term dragonaria, or “vortex of storm air”, based on its location overhanging the sea, where the wind blows stronger and it is easier to spot approaching enemies. At the fortress entrance, you will find two 16th-century cannons that were used to defend the castle from Saracen raids.

In the 1970s, the fortress became home to the Tyrrhenian Aquarium, a small museum where you can admire various local marine species, all re-homed by the keeper of the castle. When the Aquarium closed, the fish were moved to Genoa.

Today, the fortress hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year. You can climb up to the panoramic terrace and let the views of the sea and the whole of Camogli take your breath away.
