Overview
In the Testaccio district the graves of famous actors and poets
Writers, painters, historians, diplomats, scientists and poets of different nationalities were laid to rest in this non-Catholic cemetery built near the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, in the Testaccio district. Also known as the Protestant Cemetery or English Cemetery, in 1716, Pope Clement XI allowed some members of the exiled Stuart family to be buried here.
Buried here you will find illustrious personalities: writer Gregory Corso; poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats, historian Antonio Gramsci; explorer Thomas Jefferson Page; writers Carlo Emilio Gadda, Miriam Mafai and Andrea Camilleri, poet Dario Bellezza and actor Pietro Sharoff. Also, in the cemetery stands the Angel of Grief memorial, sculpted by William Wetmore Story in memory of his wife.
It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Europe and has been declared a Monument Area of National Interest. To this day, it represents a visiting destination for many tourists.
