Belvedere del Gianicolo

The spectacular terrace over Rome

It stands on the right bank of the Tiber River and climbs the hill of the same name, dotted with sycamore trees. It is the Belvedere on the Janiculum Hill, one of the most beautiful views in the entire capital.

In the centre of the large square stands the imposing equestrian statue of Garibaldi, a bronze monument depicting the Hero of Two Worlds on horseback on a high marble pedestal, on which are carved episodes from his life and allegorical figures of Europe and America.

Striking, however, is the Terrace over Rome from which one's gaze wanders over the Eternal City and the parade of its many monuments, from the Pantheon to the Altare della Patria, and on to the mountains of Lazio. No matter if it is sunrise or sunset: the Belvedere del Gianicolo offers intense emotions at any hour of the day.

But if you want to witness something original, don't miss the cannon firing at noon: since 1904, every day at 12 noon sharp, 3 soldiers fire a blank shot from a World War I cannon, placed just below the terrace. A tradition, initially desired by the Vatican and now established, to mark the exact time.
