The imposing Carcer Tullianum is the oldest prison in Rome. It was used as a maximum security prison for those awaiting trial and execution. From the Middle Ages onwards, it is also known as Carcere Mamertino, and is the place where, according to tradition, the Apostles Pietro and Paolo spent their last days before being martyred.
