Paganico Sabino

Paganico Sabino on Lake Turano: the village with a terrace suspended over the void

Paganico Sabino is a village in the Sabina region that clings on to a hill, going from Lake Turano to the hill summit, offering views of the lake and the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve.

The belvedere of the fortress

At the top of the village stands the so-called belvedere della rocca, a metal platform suspended over a rocky ridge that plunges into the Obito Gorge. The structure resembles a nest clinging to the cliff edge, evoking the eagle's nest found in the gorge below. The view is breathtaking, though not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.

Nature and curiosities outside the village

There are many places for nature lovers who enjoy the outdoors to visit. The Obito Gorges are a deep ravine carved by the waters of the stream of the same name. Near the San Giorgio area, the Rencricchittu rocks form a spur about 11 metres high. There is the ancient Mola with the remains of a millstone, the Fonte della Signora spring and other springs known for their healing properties. Below the Turanense provincial road lies the Pietra Scritta (Carved in Stone), a cube-shaped funerary monument of the Muttini family, dating to the second half of the 1st century BC.

Festivals and flavours

In November, the Castagnata celebrates the area's signature product (chestnuts). On the first of May, Calendimaggio welcomes the arrival of the warm season, alongside the Sagra dei Vertuti, showcasing a legume and grain soup flavoured with wild thyme and dressed with Sabina olive oil.
