Borgo di Vigoleno: a stroll through the Middle Ages
Halfway between Parma and Piacenza lies one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, perfect for spending a day immersed in history.
Borgo di Vigoleno has also been Orange Flag certified by the Italian Touring Club and, thanks to its architectural structure, represents a unique example of medieval residential construction.
Crenellated walls and a delightful centre
The village heart is the Church of San Giorgio, built in the second half of the 12th century, and the 16th-century fountain in the centre of the main square.
The defensive system that protected the integrity of the complex was also impressive.
The elegant architecture is characterised by the imposing crenellated walls that can be visited via a scenic route originally used for patrols. Today, it offers a view of an enchanting panorama of the hills surrounding the village.
The beauty of transitional seasons
Spring and autumn, the best time to visit Vigoleno and appreciate its atmosphere.
However, it is the Mercatini delle Meraviglie, during which many craftsmen display their creative works, that attract many people to Vigoleno. Scheduled from spring to Christmas, they wind through the low stone houses, the castle, the church of San Giorgio and the Oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie.
If you are travelling to the village of Vigoleno, plan a visit to the Museo degli Orsanti, where you can discover the fascinating story of men who put on musical shows to attract audiences with trained animals around Europe.
Less than ten kilometres away is Vernasca, known for the Church of the Antica Pieve di San Colombano, built in the 18th century, where musical performances are often staged. Be sure to taste the Vin Santo di Vigoleno, a wine with a registered designation of origin whose vinification process takes place here.
Before returning to the fold to spend the night in one of the beautiful suites of Vigoleno Castle, enchanting building faithfully furnished in the style of the village, stop at the Borgo di Castell'Arquato, perched on the Val D'Arda hills. Beautiful monuments and a super view of the Piacenza hills await you.
