Easter on Ischia

18.04.2014 - 21.04.2014

The spectacular Angel Run against the beautiful backdrop of Naples Bay

Internationally-famous tourist destination, Ischia is pristine landscapes and cultural intrigue – not to mention a thermal spa hub – amidst a clear blue sea.
With Holy Week around the corner, visitors have yet another reason to indulge in the splendor and charm of this island, with its ancient rites and special ambience.
In the Medieval village of ForioEaster morning (April 20th) sees the Angel’s Run along the town’s main thoroughfare. The sacred tradition, organized by the Arch-confraternity of the Church of Santa Maria Visitapoveri, dates back to the 1600s.

The Angel’s Run, or Corsa dell’Angelo, re-enacts the meeting between the Virgin and the Risen Christ, accompanied by St. John the Apostle and by the Angel.
A statue of the Madonna, her visage veiled in white, encounters her son just-risen, while the people launch confetti from their balconies, the church bells toll, and Easter thus reaches its apex.
The Angel makes its last run before, in denouement, reaching Mary and the Christ, who sends his mother to announce the news; with John the Apostle alongside her, she makes her way towards the sepulchre.
Folklore meets religion on Easter Sunday, but of course, vibrant people and good food are always in store on this balmy island. Yet that’s not all: come Easter Monday, be sure to take advantage of Ischia’s therapeutic waters, mineral springs and refreshing waves before even thinking about calling it a weekend.
