12.04.2011 - 19.09.2011
Following the success of the exhibition about Vespiano, 'Divus Vespasianus', for 2011 the Special Superintendency for the archaeological heritage of Rome, has programmed an exhibition about another Roman emperor, Nero.
The exhibition will be open from 12th April to 18th September 2011, in the exhibition area on the 2nd level of the Colosseum, in the Curia Julia and the Temple of Romulus in the Roman Forum, in Nero's Cryptoporticus and the museum on the Palatine hill, and will be a journey through the places relevant to Nero in Rome's central archaeological area.
This exhibition about the last of the Julio-Claudian era emperors, takes a new look at Nero the Emperor, who was strongly penalised in his time by the propaganda of the aristocracy, and valorises the new information about two aspects of his reign: the fire that destroyed a good part of the city in 64 AD, and the subsequent reconstruction policies initiated by the emperor in Rome between 64 and 68 AD. The exhibition is in Rome's central archaeological area, amidst ancient spaces, making direct contact with the places where Nero lived and was involved with both before and after the fire. The exhibition is accompanied by a wider contemplation of Nero the emperor, by looking at his family relationships, the propaganda of the time, and the misfortune that led to the name of Nero being so notorious to this day. The Colosseum plays host to a reconstruction of the fire, based on material discovered in recent digs. The emperor's grandiose building plans are also be featured, alongside the architectural decoration of his time, with a never before seen virtual tour of the Domus Aurea.
