One of Italy’s most prestigious and most famous festivals is opening its arms to jazz lovers for the 40th time in its history: Umbria Jazz in Perugia, this year celebrating four decades of music throughout the City of Perugia’s characteristic historic center. And the usually-silent city streets and piazzas can hardly contain the crowd’s energy, so great is its enthusiasm for the diverse concerts and performances making up the Umbria Jazz programme. The Perugian atmosphere thus becomes an occasion of joyous emotions and sounds during the early part of July.
Artistic Director and President for the Fondazione di Partecipazione Umbria Jazz are Carlo Pagnotta and Renzo Arbore, respectively and, as with every year, the public can expect some of Italian and international jazz’s biggest names to take the stage: think Mario Biondi and Pino Daniele, Simona Molinari, John Legend, Dee Dee Bridgewater & Ramsey Lewis, Diana Krall, Stefano Bollani and the Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil, Roberto Gatto, Eduardo De Crescenzo, Paolo Fresu and Omar Sosa and many others.
Finally, organizers are paying attention to services more than ever, with a heavy focus on hospitality, family and children. Specifically, Family Areas are being set up for children to play together and in the company of qualified personnel while their parents enjoy a show or two. The play zone also provides changing-tables, a feeding zone, courtesy baby slings and toys for children ages 0-12. Event entrance for children 7 years ang younger is free.
Charity concerts are in the works as well: the Nazionale Italiana Cantanti (singers) and the Nazionale Italiana Jazzisti (Jazz musicians) are to collaborate on a few numbers at the Curi di Perugia Stadium in “Jazz for Solidarity” on July 5th. The proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the Hospitals Association of the Capital of Umbria for the construction of pediatric recovery spaces hospital emergency rooms.
