St Peter's, the heart of the Catholic church

This long straight road is Via della Conciliazione, created in 1936 to link Rome and Piazza San Pietro, the heart of the Catholic church. Turning away from the Vatican we see Castel Sant'Angelo which, built as a mausoleum for the emperor Hadrian in the second century, became a prison in the Middle Ages and later a refuge for the Popes in times of danger.
