In ancient Rome the basilica was a covered forum and was used for the administration of justice and for business, above all during the colder months of the year. The basilica of Pompeii, where we are standing at the moment, was supported by twenty-eight imposing columns. Close by is the podium of the court, with two orders of columns partially restored.
