Campo Santo Stefano

In Venice a square is called a 'campo'. Enclosed by noble palaces and enhanced by churches and statues, they open suddenly between the winding lanes and canals. In Campo Santo Stefano stands the monument to Niccolò Tommaseo, hero of the 1848 uprising against the Austrians, and the church of Santo Stefano faces onto the square, built between the fourteenth and the fifteenth centuries.
