Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco is one of the most famous squares in the world, ever the heart of public life in Venice. Almost rectangular in shape, surrounded by buildings and continuous porticoes, it is dominated by the Basilica of San Marco which, with its sparkling facade draws the visitor's attention, while in front of it stands the tall belltower. The church was founded in the ninth century to house the remains of the evangelist Mark, patron of the city, and the subsequent styles, Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance can be easily noted. Around us there are other monuments of great prestige, such as the Clock Tower and, towards the lagoon, the Ducal Palace.
