Piazza Maggiore

Bologna is known as 'the wise' and 'the fat', adjectives that recall two characteristics of the city and the territory. 'The wise' refers to the university, founded more than nine centuries ago; 'the fat' reminds us of the richness of the agriculture and the flavoursome cooking. The medieval identity of Bologna is evident at every step in its brick buildings and its long porticoes. Here we are in the Piazza Maggiore, dominated by the unfinished facade of the church of San Petronio, before which stands the Palazzo del Podestà and, beside the church, the battlemented Palazzo dei Notai.
