Sovana

Overview

The small and charming village of Sovana, a fraction of the municipality of Sorano, has its roots in the 7th century BC.

Its importance in the 6th century is testified by its relationship with Vulci and in Roman times it became Municipium. As the years went by, its centre developed in the neighborhood of the pre-existing Etruscan necropolis, under the control of the powerful Aldobrandeschi family.

The Rocca Aldobrandesca is among its main attractions: it stands on the foundations of a castle built by the Aldobrandeschi family in the 11th century. On the opposite side of town is St. Peter's Cathedral, considered Sovana's main monument, a historical example of the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style. Leaping back in time, the Sovana necropolis is a real treasure trove for its variety of tombs and examples of Etruscan architecture.
