The Via Francigena in Tuscany

Stage n. 1 - From Passo della Cisa to Pontremoli (distance in km. 19.3)
"From Passo della Cisa the route reaches Passo del Righetto where, after crossing the main road, it turns into a steep and demanding descent to Groppoli. A long climb, after passing through the villages of Groppodalosio, Casalina and Topelecca, leads to Passo della Crocetta. From there a trail continues to Arzenigo, in a short while reaching charming Pontremoli, built between two rivers and characterised by a large number of bridges.
Along this route there are no dangerous or risky traffic spots."

Stage n. 2 - From Pontremoli to Aulla (distance in km 33.3)
"A challenging and very interesting stage passing through several charming hamlets: Ponticello, Filattiera, Filetto, Villafranca and Virgoletta. Visit to Pieve di Sorano not to be missed."

Stage n. 3 - From Aulla to Avenza (distance in km 32.4)
“The first part of the route takes place largely along trails; it is very challenging and very beautiful and offers the first view of the sea.
The old hamlets along the route are rich in atmosphere, with the opportunity to visit the ruins of Castello della Brina and lovely Sarzana village.”

Stage n. 4 – From Avenza to Pietrasanta (distance in km 28.8)
“The route meanders through the vineyards covering the hills above Avenza and Massa, offering a succession of beautiful views of the Apuane mountains and the sea.
It then crosses the centre of Massa before climbing towards the Aghinolfi Castle, following another scenic road. Particular caution is advisable with regard to the local traffic.
The stage ends in Pietrasanta, “”the little Italian Athens””, adoptive homeland of artists from all over the world.
The availability of water sources is quite good, refreshment stops in Massa, Montignoso, Strettoia.”

Stage n. 5 – From Pietrasanta to Lucca (distance in km. 32.2)
“Immediately after Pietrasanta there’s the opportunity to visit the ancient church of S. Giovanni. From here the route follows an endless up and down through the hills of Lucca. After reaching the city centre of Camaiore and the Antica Badia, the path continues on towards Monte Magno. From here it runs along the SP1, which can be quite dangerous in places because of traffic.
From Piazzano it continues downhill into the valley of the Contesola river and, after crossing the Serchio in Ponte San Pietro, it reaches Lucca.
The availability of water sources is quite good, refreshment stops in Camaiore, Monte Magno, Valpromaro, San Macario in Piano.”

Stage n. 6 – From Lucca to Altopascio (distance in km. 18.5)
“Low level section of the route where the main attractions are the many historical and religious buildings along the path: the boundary walls and the amphitheatre in Lucca, the Pieve of Capannori, the Badia in Pozzeveri, the church of S. Jacopo and the old city centre in Altopascio.
Extra care should be taken along the stretch of road leading to Corte Ginori and when crossing the various main roads encountered during this stage.
Outside urban centres it is not possible to access a water source.”

Stage n. 7 – From Altopascio to San Miniato (distance in km 29)
“The initial part of the route runs along a paved section of the beautiful ancient Via Francigena.
After passing the wild and deserted area called Cerbaie, it carries on towards Ponte a Cappiano, where part of the ancient Medici bridge has been converted into a hostel. From here it crosses an old reclaimed swamp and continues uphill towards the fascinating city centre of Fucecchio. After the river Arno it runs along the riverbank to San Miniato.
Water and refreshment stops in Chimenti, Galleno, Ponte a Cappiano and Fucecchio.”

Stage n. 8 – From San Miniato to Gambassi Terme (distance in km 23.9)
“Beautiful but demanding stage, particularly due to the lack of refreshment opportunities.
From San Miniato, after an hour’s walk on tarmac, the route carries on along a truly lovely path along the hillcrests of Val d’Elsa.
There are two Submansiones on the Sigerico route: the Pieve di Coiano, in rather poor conditions and the Pieve a Chianni which houses, in its old vicarage, a beautiful hostel.
The only possibilities of food and water supply are in Calenzano and there is a trattoria 500 m from Pieve di Coiano, towards Castelnuovo d’Elsa (away from the route). There is a fountain in Pieve di Coiano.”

Stage n. 9 – From Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano (distance in km 13.4)
“A short transfer stage, interesting nevertheless for the beautiful views to be enjoyed on the Via Francigena.
After an optional visit to the Sanctuary of Pancole the route carries on to the picturesque Collemucioli hamlet and from here to the delightful Pieve di Cellole.
A visit to San Gimignano is recommended. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Tuscany and, if reached on foot, can offer a different experience.
Water source in Pancole, no access to restaurants along the route.”

Stage n. 10 – From San Gimignano to Monteriggioni (distance in km 30.9)
“One of the most beautiful stages of the Via Francigena. Leaving behind San Gimignano, after an up and down stretch, the route reaches Molino d’Aiano, near one of the probable stops, as yet not precisely located, along the path of Sigerico,.
It carries on towards Badia a Coneo, Gracciano and Strove, where there’s a lovely Romanesque church.
After the exquisite architectural complex Abbadia a Isola it carries on to Monteriggioni, with its distinctive crown of towers.
Water and food stops are only available in residential areas.”

Municipality of Pisa - "Electric Via Francigena

Electric mobility in Pisa
Pisa is currently in the process of introducing a service of integrated electric mobility, which will concern both the commercial and the tourist sectors.
This service will run alongside and in conjunction with a similar one already offered in this area by a private partner,  who has agreed to supply the city area with a few additional dozens cars to supplement the fleet already established at Pisa airport, for the use of tourists and local citizens.
These arrangements, which will be completed in the coming months, will enable pilgrims walking the Via Francigena, to visit Pisa along the way, taking advantage of this "gentle electric mobility".

Features - how it works
The time period considered is connected to specific events/moments of the Jubilee, when there will be a wider "movement" of pilgrims along the Via Francigena; the service during these periods will operate, through a management system of electric mobility and on dates suggested by the Ministry,  following a specific schedule focused on the Jubilee events.
In view of the characteristics of the service of electric mobility in the city of Pisa, these vehicles may only be used within the urban area, collecting and returning to docking points at the airport and train station.
The service allows the user to move freely around the city and access even limited traffic areas, including monuments and churches of artistic and religious importance, of which the city centre is particularly rich.
Electric cars may be booked via the WEB (www.pisamo.it) and mobile Apps  by anybody who is interested: for the Jubilee of Mercy special services will be activated which will make it easier for pilgrims to access electric mobility in the city.

Time period of operation of the service:
The period identified is in relation to the entire duration of the Jubilee of Mercy.
Access to the service and costs:
In view of the characteristics of the electric mobility service  in the city of Pisa, these vehicles may be only be used within the urban area, collecting and returning to docking stations at the airport and train station.
Pilgrims who want to access the service of electric mobility or bike sharing must first register on the website, selecting the service dedicated to Jubilee of Mercy, by filling in the relevant form. The system will then forward a specific code, applicable to services for pilgrims of the Via Francigena, identified by the prefix “VFR”.

Carsharing service
Pilgrims will be able to choose on the website the date for their car reservation in Pisa (specifying the collection point: Airport or Train Station).
After entering the code provided (eg. VFR-123456) they will be offered right of first refusal on available cars, make a reservation and pay online by credit card, with a special 40% discount, only valid for their chosen date;
The code for the car can only be used once; it will then become unavailable.
If the car has not been pre-booked, pilgrims may still go to the electric car booking points (at the airport or station) and present their confidential code to qualify for the discount on the normal rate for the hire of the car.

Additional/supplementary services
Pilgrims may also combine car sharing with a bike sharing service, which will allow them to move freely around the city and access limited traffic areas, including monuments and churches of artistic and religious importance, of which the city centre is particularly rich. Furthermore, it is possible to reach the nearest stage of the Via Francigena with the same electric car.
Thus, for the Jubilee of Mercy, special services will be introduced for the benefit of pilgrims, to give them easier access to clean mobility throughout the city: the electric cars can be booked via the WEB (www.pisamo.it) and mobile Apps  by anybody who want to make a reservation; likewise the bikes reserved for the bike sharing service may be hired through the dedicated mobile App, following an advance registration to the same service.
Pilgrims who wish to access the service of electric mobility or bike sharing must first register on the website, selecting the service dedicated to Jubilee of Mercy, by filling in the relevant form. The system will then forward a specific release code, applicable to services for pilgrims of the Via Francigena, identified by the prefix “VFR”.
Still using the same release code received when registering for the Pilgrims of the Via Francigena, the user will be able to collect a bike from the docking point; this code may be re-used several times, at no extra cost, using the official App dedicated to bike sharing, required for the release of the bikes from the docking station.
