The Via Francigena in Piedmont

Stage 1 – Pont St. Martin in Ivrea (distance in km 21.3)
Upon entering Piedmont the landscape softens, the slopes and gradients become less challenging.  The route alternates between villages to pleasant paths surrounded by nature.
A must see is the complex of San Lorenzo, the hamlet of Montestrutto and the Montalto Castle.
Also not to be missed at the end of the day is a visit to the historical centre of Ivrea.
Dining in Carema, Settimo Vittone (off track) Borgofranco, Montalto, numerous water sources.

Stage n. 2 – From Ivrea to Viverone (distance in km. 20.5)
A tranquil route at the foot of the Serra of Ivrea, the largest moraine in Europe – interesting geological formation that indicates the direction.  Along the way we meet two beautiful recently restored churches: San Pietro, in the area of Bollengo, and “il Gesiun”, a ruin in the middle of the countryside, of which only the perimeter walls and the remains of a fresco are left.
A lovely village which stretches along the Piverone road offering spectacular views of Lake Viverone.  Dining in Bollengo, Palazzo Canavese, Piverone, water sources.

Stage n. 3 – From Viverone to Santhià (distance in km. 16.7)
The major attraction of the day is the Roppolo Castle, which offers a lovely view of the morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea and Lake Viverone.  An interesting visit (free) is that of the enoteca carved in the ancient cellars.  The descent to Cavaglià takes on a country road and, after the village, you can visit the Santuario di Nostra Signora del Babilone (Shrine of Our Lady of Babilone) and reach Santhià along quiet country roads.  Refreshment and water stops at Roppolo and Santhià.

Stage n. 4 – From Santhià to Vercelli (distance in km. 26.8)
This stage crosses the Vercellese plain strongly characterised by numerous rice fields; frequent meetings with different bird life of the area, attracted by the presence of water.
Pay attention to the crossing of the Ss. 413 exit from Santhià and to the three intersections with the Ss. 11 which runs parallel to our pilgrimage route.
There are only a few stretches along the verges on quiet roads with little traffic.  Much of the stage takes place on tracks and country roads outside built-up areas where it is not possible to find a water source.

Stage n. 5 - From Vercelli to Robbio (distance in km 18.6)
"The first section of this stage follows the Sesia riverbank, surrounded by poplar trees and rice fields.
From Palestro the path runs along the narrow embankments separating the flooded fields. In the proximity of Robbio, it carries on along the verge of a suburban road with little traffic.
Extra care should be taken leaving Vercelli, where the route must necessarily follow the verge along a main road, SS11.
In Vercelli and Robbio there are several attractions of historical and architectural interest.Outside urban centres it is not possible to access water sources."

Via Francigena Elettrica (Electric)

Municipality of Torino - Via Francigena Elettrica (Electric)

Service features:

The CarcityClub Society runs a traditional carsharing service, among its fleet there are 10 zero emission cars (FIAT 500 electric).
These cars are placed in the centre of the town in places where it is possible to interconnect with other means of transport (railways stations, bikesharing stations, underground stations).

Period of validity of the service:
Service established thanks to the ministerial nature fund.
The fund will cover such experimentation until 2016.
If new funds will be given the service will have continuity and can also be expanded with the electric Fiat 500 cars coming from the EXPO 2015 event.
In addition, the Piedmont Region is also examining the possibility of creating a charging station at GTT Torino Sandro Pertini Airport.

How to book:
The cars are bookable via the Carcityclub website or application on Smartphone.
To open the car, you need a BIP card (Biglietto Integrato Piemonte).
On BIP subscriptions for public transport can be uploaded (regional level) and subscriptions for Bikesharing.

Cost for use:
The cost to the public for use vary depending on the type of subscription, you can retrieve all the information on the website: www.carcityclub.it.
Obviously BIP technology could lead to the creation of a special rate which can be integrated to other services present in the area.
