Ducati, queen of the motorcycles

Ducati is one of the best known brands representing made in Italy motorcycling in the world. Their models are mainly sold in America and Japan and have shaped the history of motorcycling as they are appreciated everywhere and have become a source of inspiration for other brands’ production.

Ducati DiavelIts history

Ducati, was born in 1926 as a company specialising in radio communication research and production; like many other Italian companies, it was forced to convert production from civilian to military use during World War II. Following the German occupation and the destruction of the plant, after the war ended in 1946, supporting technological production with something new became a necessity and so the motorcycle department was created.

After thousands of projects and years of large-scale productions, in 2012 Ducati was acquired by another large company famous throughout the automotive world: Lamborghini Automobili SpA.

Historical models

In 1954 Ducati hired Fabio Taglioni, a brilliant designer who characterized Ducati motorcycles with his ideas throughout the second half of the century, by developing still used technology such as the Desmodromic system, the two-cylinder engine and the Trellis frame.

The Borgo Panigale Team in Emilia Romagna produced a succession of feathers in their caps such as the 750 GT with its twin-cylinder engine, the Scrambler which became one of the most successful models and the Pantah 500.

1993 was the year of the Monster, the first “naked” bike; that is a motorcycle with no superstructure or aerodynamic protection which inspired many other models. Its style remained unchanged from its debut until 2007 and Ducati have produced more than 150.000 specimens.
Riding the crest of innovation, in the nineties the company created the ST series (sport-touring) with bikes that are both sporting and comfortable and can be equipped with cases.

The list continues with the successful multi-road Ducati Hypermotard, the famous road sports Desmosedici RR, the first road bike developed from a racing prototype, and the more recent Ducati 1199 Panigale.

Ducati racing

Ducati has a department that manages the world motorcycling competitions. These are the Superbike races, where the company has won 14 world titles and the Supersport (1 title) and Superstock (3 titles) races. Ducati also takes part in the Moto GP championship, in which it won its first world title in 2007.

The Ducati Museum was built  in Borgo Panicale in 1998. As well as visiting the latest models through a series of seven thematic multimedia rooms, you can also trace the history of this great company. Ducati was the first company to offer a motorcycle for sale exclusively via internet; it was the year 2000 and the bike was a Ducati MH900e.
